For those looking for a celebration or a carnival, holidays to Amsterdam could be timed to coincide with Amsterdam's gay pride festival for a perfect party weekend.

Often a week-long affair, Amsterdam's pride officially begins next week (August 5) with pre-parties already being held all across the town. Amongst other more subdued events, the official pride 2011 opening ceremony will see a colourful parade of boats launched from Westerdok harbour on Saturday 6.

70+ boats carrying revellers dressed in drag and other bright and wonderful garb will sail through the city's network of canals along Prinsengracht, en route to the parade's finishing point at Oosterdok harbour.
