24 Hours in Zurich

Zurich AlpsOften referred to as the “portal to the Alps”, Zurich has become a popular tourist destination over the last few years, notably because of its truly epicurean feel. Whether you are looking for spectacular scenery, a shopping spree, a culture check or a tasty meal, look no further: a city break to Zurich has it all, even in only 24 hours.

The first thing you will want to do is admire the incredible views on the Lake Zurich and its background, the Alps. There are plenty of great picture taking spots on either sides of the lake, but locals tend to stick to Bellerive on the western side – which is just as well, because you will get the chance to see the China Gardens and you’ll be closer to the historic town centre.

If you can ever manage to pull yourself away from the views, head towards the Grossmünster, which was, according to the legend, founded by Charlemagne in 1220, and is easily recognizable by its twin towers. The area near the church is really worth strolling around – take some time to admire the architectural details and take in the atmosphere. Right on the other side of the Limmat river stands the equally impressive Fraumünster, which dates back to the 13th century, and features 5 superb stained glass windows from none other than famous artist Marc Chagall. After you have visited both churches, why not get a light meal at the veggie Hitl restaurant? (28 Sihlstrasse)

Grossmuenster churchAfter lunch, go do some window-shopping along Bahnofstrasse, one of the most expensive and exclusive streets in Europe – tempted a Swiss watch, perhaps? One thing that won’t break the bank in this area, however, comes in tiny, tasty packages – candy! Visit the Teuscher store to fix your sweet envy (Storchengasse 9). For more affordable shopping, cross the river again and walk towards the alleys of Niederdorf in the Old Town, which boasts plenty of pretty squares and quirky stores full of gift ideas, that certainly will make you part with your money. Also, do not miss the house where Lenin lived before he went back to Russia to lead the Revolution (Spiegelgasse 14).

To wrap up the afternoon beautifully, do like the locals: hop on an after-work 90 minutes boat ride around the lake. There is nothing quite like the sight of afternoon light reflecting on the water and the Alps – a true life-long memory! To experience this, walk towards the lake and board at the Bürkliplatz jetty, then above all, simply enjoy the ride!

Once you are back on dry land, it’s going to be dinner time. A great place to head to is Zeughauskeller (on Bahnhofstrasse 28a), a hearty restaurant that serves Swiss classics in a beautiful 15th century house – the Kalbsgeschnetzeltes, a veal dish, is particularly popular and a typical Zurich dish. Authentic experience guaranteed!

Feel like burning off the extra calories, now? Why not walk back towards the train station and check in the Hive Club (Geroldstrasse 5), a well-known venue that offers different rooms with each different music, DJ and atmosphere. If you are more a bar kind-of-person, go to Bierhalle Wolf (Limmatquai 132), where you will find a vast selection of Swiss beers and usually live music. Whatever you decide to do, Zurich has it – and with so many flights to Switzerland, you have no reason not to go!
